Dublin-based rental firm EQ Lighting recently provided lighting design and equipment for Oxegen’s 8000-capacity Red Bull Electric Ballroom, following an appointment by festival promoters MCD. The lighting rig designed by Rob Jones consisted of 5 audience finger trusses with 30 Clay Paky Sharpys. The 189W moving beam light turned out to be the perfect fit for the indoor dance arena.

EQL Operations Manager Garrett Hanley commented that having seen the Sharpys at Clay Paky’s Bergamo base last February, ‘we felt that it was the perfect choice for the Electric Ballroom, and the Sharpys performed above and beyond our expectations. The mid-air effects achievable from these lamps are truly spectacular’. EQ Lighting director Shay Hannon added ‘that as a company we are always striving to be innovative, and a fixture of this calibre allows us to be at the cutting edge of lighting technology. A big thanks has to be given to the team, Crew Chief Raoul Simpson, console operator Sandy Robertson and LX technicians Ronan Humphries and Dan Adderley’.

Sharpys weren’t the only Clay Paky fixture in the arena; also on the stage trusses were Alpha Beam 700 and Alpha Spot 700, and EQ Lighting reported that the kit worked flawlessly all weekend. The system was controlled with a Chamsys MQ200. Some of the dance acts featured at the 3-day festival included Steve Aoki, Sven Vath, Bloody Beetroots and Afro Jack.

Known as one of Europe’s largest festivals, this year’s Oxegen attracted 90,000 people headline acts including Beyoncé, the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Bruno Mars and the Black Eyed Peas. EQ Lighting is the only stockist of Clay Paky fixtures in Ireland, available for sale and hire from their Dublin offices.
