Congolese-French rapper GIMS thrilled fans with summer tour dates in open-air venues and festivals in Europe, including a June concert at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, France where Claypaky Volero Cubes and Tambora Linear 100s had leading roles.

Lighting Designer Maxime Tisseuil for SCENYNC created an immersive 3D environment of light, movement, energy and emotion for GIMS in Lille.  “For this event, I had full creative freedom regarding the lighting design, while still working within the technical and budget constraints of the project,” he explains.  “The schedule was particularly tight, with one day for the build and one day for rehearsals.  It was therefore essential to design a system that was both ambitious and efficient, while also being quick to set up and operate.  The overall concept was to create a highly graphic lighting system capable of working alongside the video content and the different sequences of the show, while bringing a strong sense of movement and dynamics to the stage.”

Maxime chose 195 Claypaky Volero Cubes and 336 Tambora Linear 100s for the concert, which were provided by lighting vendor Dushow.  He positioned the Tamboras on the left and right PRT trusses, creating continuous and parallel lines and reinforcing the overall geometry of the lighting design.  The Volero Cubes were primarily installed along the bottom of the screen to follow and match the colors of media content and along another section of the stage edge to help visually define the performance area.

“The Tambora Linear 100 was selected because it combines a powerful color pixel and a powerful cold pixel in the same fixture,” he explains.  “Its pixel-mapping capabilities are also very satisfying, making it possible to create dynamic graphic effects and continuous lines of light.

“The goal of the Volero Cubes was to create large pixel lines while retaining the ability to animate them through the fixtures’ tilt movement.  The fixture offers a wide range of combinations between the color and cold pixels, allowing us to create different effects and atmospheres.”

Maxime reports that the concert was “a great opportunity to showcase the capabilities of Claypaky fixtures in a large-scale live environment, while working under significant time constraints.  The Tamboras particularly met our expectations thanks to their power, pixel control and dimming performance.  They responded reliably to the different requirements of the show and worked particularly well for pixel-mapping effects.  The Volero Cubes also brought real value to the design through their ability to create large animated pixel lines using its tilt movement.”
