Lighting Designer
Giovanni Pinna

Claypaky confirmed its commitment to education again in 2026 by opening its doors to students of the Master in Lighting Design and LED Technology promoted by Politecnico di Milano. For 24 years, the Master has represented a path of excellence for the growth of young lighting designers, providing skills applicable across a wide range of contexts: from live entertainment to interior architecture, from urban spaces to museums, as well as temporary installations and residential environments.

The educational program is structured to explore both the analysis and synthesis of lighting design methodologies, guiding students through every stage of the creative process—from concept development to planning, all the way to the technical aspects related to rigging and installation.

Among the Master’s lecturers is Giovanni Pinna, a nationally renowned lighting designer also known for his long-standing collaborations with artists such as Vasco Rossi. Pinna leads the course “Lighting Design for Entertainment,” which includes practical workshops carried out with the support of partners from the entertainment industry. Supporting him is Marco Zucchinali, who made a significant contribution during the project definition and development phase. Once again this year, Claypaky made available a venue of exceptional prestige: the Teatro Sociale in Bergamo.

Opened in 1809 and originally intended for Bergamo’s nobility, Teatro Sociale remained active until the 1920s. After being used as an exhibition space between 1974 and 2006, the building underwent an important restoration project jointly carried out by the Municipality of Bergamo and the Italian Ministry of Culture. Within this extraordinary historical and artistic setting, Giovanni Pinna delivered a full day of the Master’s program, involving around 30 aspiring young lighting designers.

Based on a lighting plot defined by Marco Zucchinali in collaboration with resident lighting designer Alessandro Andreoli, the lighting rig used for the activity included all the main Claypaky products dedicated to theatrical lighting. In particular, the workshop featured Claypaky moving lights with multispectral LED sources Rhapsodya and Sinfonya Profile 600, alongside the static fixtures Klemantis, Orkis CYC, and Actoris, produced by ADB by Claypaky. The lighting system was programmed using a grandMA2 console.

At the end of the experience, Pinna highlighted the importance of being able to work in a real theater using professional tools, emphasizing how direct interaction with the creative process and the stage environment represents a fundamental step in the training of future lighting designers.
